You can highlight a paperback or an ebook. You cannot highlight an audiobook.

Excerpt is an audiobook player with a highlighter. Tap Highlight and the last 30 seconds you heard are saved as text, while the book keeps playing. Take one without touching the phone: from the Lock Screen, your headphones, the Action button, Apple Watch or Siri. Link the ebook and the highlight is the author’s own sentence, and the page follows the narration as you listen. Excerpt is free, with no account. Premium is an optional yearly subscription that adds Whisper transcription models, ebook matching for every book rather than one, Suggested Highlights and AI clean-up of transcripts. It runs on iOS, iPadOS and watchOS.

What it plays, and what it does not.

Plays: m4b and mp3 files, a zip of tracks, an Audiobookshelf server, and LibriVox.
Does not play: Audible, Libby, and any other audiobook protected with DRM. Excerpt cannot import them.
Price: Free, with no account. Excerpt Premium is $12.99 a year.
Runs on: iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. Books and highlights sync through your own iCloud.
Privacy: Transcription, ebook matching and suggestions run on the device. The developer has no server and no account system.
