If a book has an epub linked, the Transcribe button in the highlight editor reads Realign. Tapping it transcribes the highlight again from its audio, and then looks up that transcript in the ebook, and replaces the text with the exact wording from the ebook. Pressing and holding the button gives two more options, for when you only want one half of that.

Realign

Tap Realign to redo the whole highlight. Excerpt transcribes the audio again with the transcription model that is currently selected in Settings, searches the linked epub for the passage that matches, and if it finds one replaces the transcript with the wording from the book.

This is the one to use after you have trimmed a highlight with Set Start or Set End (as the text no longer matches the audio), or if the first transcription was poor. It is also how you transcribe an old highlight again after switching to a better model. It is the slowest of the three, as the audio has to be transcribed before it can be matched.

The result is shown under the transcript as Matched to EPUB, No EPUB match, or Time may be wrong. See read the EPUB status for what each one means.

Match with EPUB

Press and hold Realign and choose Match with EPUB if the transcript is already right but the highlight is not matched to the book. This skips the transcription, so it is quicker. Excerpt searches the epub for the passage closest to the text that is currently in the highlight, and replaces the text with the wording from the book if it finds one.

It is useful after you have corrected a transcript yourself (for example a name the transcription got wrong) and the match failed the first time. It does not change the start or end of the highlight. If the text is under five words, or fewer than half of its words match a passage in the book, Excerpt shows No Match Found, in which case correct the transcript a little more or use Realign instead.

Transcribe only

Press and hold Realign and choose Transcribe only if you want the words as the narrator said them rather than as they are printed (for example when the narration differs from the ebook). Excerpt transcribes the audio again and keeps that as the text of the highlight. It still records where the passage is in the epub, so Show in EPUB keeps working.
